But what is undoubtedly the highlight of this painting is the facial expressions of the subjects in this composition—something that is rare in traditional Tanjore paintings. Rama’s face and stance conveys a calm nobility, Sita’s graceful tranquillity, Lakshmana’s loving devotion, and Hanuman’s pose and expression convey complete submission and adoration. The subtle shading technique utilized in the bodies and faces of all four subjects enhance them and the gently shaded outlines set the figures out so well against the beautiful ochre yellow background.
